Horn & Hardart began in Philadelphia in 1888, and coffee was part of the business from the start. As the company grew, its coffee became part of the daily routine for generations of customers.
Today, Automat Coffee is where the Horn & Hardart story continues.
Is Automat Coffee the Original Horn & Hardart Coffee?
Our Medium Roast is inspired by the coffee once served at Horn & Hardart.
We studied historical records, roasting techniques, and customer memories to bring it back. We have refined it to meet today's coffee standards, but the goal remains the same: a smooth, dependable cup of coffee you want to drink every day.
This isn't simply an old name on a new bag of coffee. It is the first part of our effort to bring Horn & Hardart back for a new generation.
What Does Automat Coffee Taste Like?
Medium Roast
Our 100% Arabica Medium Roast uses beans sourced from Brazil, Colombia, and Costa Rica. It is mellow and balanced with a clean finish. This is the roast most closely connected to the classic Horn & Hardart coffee experience.
Dark Roast
Our 100% Arabica Dark Roast is a blend of beans from high-grade mountain regions in Central America. It is bold, with notes of dark chocolate and caramelized sweetness.
Both are made to be approachable, everyday coffees.
Where Is Automat Coffee Roasted?
Automat Coffee is freshly roasted in Philadelphia, the city where Horn & Hardart began in 1888 and where the first Automat in the United States opened in 1902.
More than a century later, we're proud to be roasting Horn & Hardart coffee here again.

Because coffee was always at the heart of Horn & Hardart.
At its peak, Horn & Hardart served roughly 70 million cups of coffee a year. For many customers, it wasn't a special-occasion coffee. It was simply their coffee.
