Automat Coffee
Does it come in single-serve?
Yes, we offer our medium and dark roast in coffee pods. Coffee Pods fit standard K-Cup and Keurig brewing machines. Not compatible with Keurig 2.0 (Year 2015-2019) brewers.
Does it contain chicory?
Some people think H&H Coffee contained chicory. From what we can tell, it actually did not.
Frank Hardart perfected how to make coffee as a boy working in New Orleans. New Orleans coffee in the late 1800's did have chicory in it but also used the French-drip method. This was revolutionary at the time when the rest of the country was boiling coffee! Frank Hardart moved to Philadelphia from New Orleans in 1888 and opened up the first Horn & Hardart restaurant which was celebrated for its French-drip coffee. We have searched through what little records remain from that time and from what we can determine Frank created his own coffee blend and the blend that was ultimately served in the Automats by 1902 did not have chicory.
Is Automat Coffee the same coffee Horn & Hardart used to serve?
Our medium roast is a close recreation of the original Automat blend. We studied historical records, roasting techniques, and customer memories to bring it back as faithfully as possible. While we’ve refined it slightly to meet today’s coffee standards, the goal was to capture the flavor and spirit of what so many remember.

Horn & Hardart History
What happened to the original H&H Automats?
The Automats thrived for decades. But by the 1970s and '80s, rising costs, shifting consumer preferences, and management missteps led to Horn & Hardart’s decline. The last Automat closed in 1991. Still, the concept never fully disappeared—Automats can still be found in parts of Europe and Asia.
Is this connected to the original Horn & Hardart company?
The Horn & Hardart name and trademarks were purchased out of bankruptcy in the early 1990s. Since then, the brand has lived on in different forms. A few years ago, a small team of passionate Automat fans came together to breathe new life into H&H. Our goal? To honor its legacy, revive its values, and one day bring back the Automat itself.
Will the Automat work in today’s world?
We think so. Automats are still alive and well in other parts of the world, and the core idea—efficiency, quality, and accessibility—has never gone out of style. We’re taking what made the original great, updating what needs to evolve, and building something that feels both familiar and new.
