Horn & Hardart, established in 1888 by Joseph Horn and Frank Hardart, revolutionized dining with the introduction of the Automat in 1902. For over a century, Horn & Hardart stood as a symbol of innovation, quality, and convenience.

In 2023, we embarked on a journey to revive Horn & Hardart. We began by reintroducing Automat Coffee and reconnecting with our dedicated community of Automat enthusiasts. This effort has laid the foundation for a new era of growth and opportunity.

Our vision is to bring back the iconic Horn & Hardart Automat, inspiring a new generation with its timeless ingenuity. Today, we are more committed than ever to preserving our legacy while looking toward a future filled with exciting possibilities.

  • 1888

    Joseph Horn and Frank Hardart opened their first lunchroom in Philadelphia, on December 22, 1888. Located at 39 South 13th St.

  • 1898

    Frank Hardart and Joseph Horn incorporate as the Horn & Hardart Baking Company.

  • 1902

    The first Automat opens at 818 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia, PA on Monday, June 9th.

  • 1912

    The first New York City Automat opens in Times Square at 1557 Broadway.

  • 1918

    Frank Hardart passes away.

  • 1922

    Horn & Hardart introduced retail stores, where prepacked Automat meals and desserts were sold over the counter.

  • 1932

    NYC had 42 Automat-cafeterias, Philadelphia had 46 H&H restaurants and just under half were Automats.

  • 1941

    Joseph Horn dies. He had sat each day at the Philadelphia H&H sample table until the last year of his life.

  • 1952

    There were 171 Horn & Hardart Restaurants, Automats, and Retail Shops across Philadelphia and New York, serving over 750,000 people a day.

  • 1991

    The last remaining Automat at 200 East 42nd Street in NYC closed down.

  • 2023

    Horn & Hardart revival begins with the reintroduction of Automat Coffee.

  • 2024

    Horn & Hardart shares plans to bring back the Automat.
